A 15-year-old boy described as uncontrollable was denied bail yesterday on five charges, including sexually assaulting his 13-year-old sister. The teenager, accompanied by his mother, appeared before Siparia Magistrate Avason Quinlan. He was wearing a tattered pants, a jersey and rubber slippers. The offence allegedly took place on February 13 at their Santa Flora home.

The other charges include three offences of house breaking and larceny and one of shop breaking and larceny. It is alleged that during the period July 25 to September 8, he broke into three houses and a shop and stole over $20,000 in items including a television, cellphones, iPads and a quantity of alcohol. The charges were laid by WPC Monsegue, PC Thomas and PC Rocke.

On the issue of bail, his lawyer Alvin Pariagsingh told the magistrate he was leaving that to the court’s discretion.  He said the teenager no longer attended school, was uncontrollable and had a bad temper.  Pariagsingh told the court that the boy had spent time at the Youth Training Centre (YTC) because his mother could not control him. He said it was also impossible for the teenager and his sister to be kept separate because they lived with their parents in a one-room house.

Under those circumstances, the magistrate denied bail, saying it would be in the teenager’s best interest to be detained at YTC. She advised the teenager of his right to apply to a judge in chambers for bail. The matter was adjourned to October 17.
