Police are describing the death of 17-year-old Ricardo Mohammed,  who was shot during an incident with a police constable yesterday morning, as accidental. According to reports,  a uniformed police officer saw two men and a woman smoking marijuana near the military museum in Chaguaramas at around 5.30 am.

The officer seized the marijuana and was speaking to the men when another man grabbed his service pistol. During struggle for the gun, it went off hitting Mohammed in the neck. Mohammed was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A full investigation into the shooting has been ordered by head of the Western Division, Senior Superintendent Ishmael David, who along with Inspector Henry Dann visited the scene. Police are also looking for the man who grabbed the officer’s gun. At his Cuthbert Road, Diego Martin home yesterday, Mohammed’s father Richard said his son, a labourer at Sanicup, would have celebrated his 18th birthday on October 9.

Mohammed said his son liked parties and was coming from a party when he was killed. “I just trying to hold up here for the family to lead and pull everybody through,” he said.
